Procedure, Safety, Critical Systems: Why Data Centers Want Ex-Nukes

In this episode of the Data Center Nukes Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Brian Knapp, a 25-year veteran of the Navy Nuclear Program and currently working on data center construction and commissioning with JLL. Brian shared his journey from operating nuclear plants on aircraft carriers and submarines to leading a facilities team in the data center industry. His insights shed light on why former Navy nukes are an excellent fit for data center roles and how they can leverage their skills for a successful transition.

“The ability to get into the data center world and do anything from the construction side, the commissioning, the operation of maintenance, the behind the scenes, efficiency and support work. Nukes are especially well set up to go to any one of those areas.”

The Natural Fit for Data Centers

Brian highlighted that the technical background and critical systems experience of Navy nukes make them well-suited for data center roles. He emphasized that the industry’s growth presents numerous opportunities for career advancement, job security, and financial stability.

Key Skills for Data Center Success

Attention to detail, a questioning attitude, and the ability to learn quickly are vital skills that former Navy nukes bring to the table. Brian explained that these principles, drilled into every nuclear operator’s head, are crucial for the proper operation of data centers.

Opportunities Across the Board

From construction to commissioning, operations, and maintenance, there are various roles within the data center industry that former nukes can excel in. Brian shared his own experience working with Facebook and how the industry has opened up to individuals with similar backgrounds.

Building a Data Center Team

As Brian embarks on a new role with JLL, he discussed what he looks for in potential team members. Leadership experience, technical knowledge, and the ability to collaborate are essential qualities for success in the data center industry.

Quality of Life and Compensation

Brian provided insights into the quality of life and compensation in the data center industry. With the industry’s rapid growth, driven by advancements like generative AI, there are abundant opportunities for lucrative careers and personal growth.
