Resume Submission – This is a newer project where I hope to collect and disseminate anonymous resumes with the group. Again, you can submit anonymously by submitting a resume with your name and/or other identifying details removed, or you can just submit your regular resume and I’ll do the work to anonymize it. Do I need to customize my resume, or can I send in the same (really good) resume to every job search?
Short answer: YES, you have to customize your resume for every job that you care about getting. It increases your chances of actually getting the job significantly. If you have a good base resume the customization should only take ~10 minutes. Make sure that you explicitly and shamelessly use the words and phrases the company has told you in the job description that they care about.
What format should I send my resume in?
Short answer: Always send your resume as a PDF and your resume should be titled Firstname Lastname – Resume.

How can I apply for jobs in different cities without being at a disadvantage for living out of town?
Instead of your current city, or alongside it, put “Moving to: City, State” at the top of your resume for whichever location you’re applying to so they know that you’re already dead-set on relocation.
How do I explain a gap in my work history on my resume?
Short answer: Have one resume bullet point that says, “Needed scheduling flexibility to take care of some personal matters; worked as an [independent consultant] for a year.”
